Whatever

Have you noticed how often the word “whatever” is expressed in scripture.

Most notably after Philippians 4:6-7, where we (beloved of the Lord) are exhorted and encouraged to stand firm in the faith by prayer:

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

And then note the instruction as to what we are to focus on after we have prayed and turned our need over to God, through Jesus:

Philippians 4: 8-9

“Finally brothers and sisters (beloved in the Lord)

Whatever is true,

Whatever is noble,

Whatever is right,

Whatever is pure,

Whatever is lovely,

Whatever is admirable,

          If anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Two other important scripture passages using the word “whatever” are:

John 15:7

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish. and it will be done for you.”

Colossians 3:17

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Watch for the word “whatever” as you read the word of God.
